Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History

Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History
Facts on File, Inc. | 2010 | ISBN: 0816075751 | 728 pages | PDF | 15.1 MB

Muslims have long played a central role in American history. Since the colonial period when an estimated 20,000 African Muslims were transported to America as slaves, through the early 20th century when Muslim immigrants entered the United States from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, to the present day, Islam has been an integral part of the American experience. The founding of the Nation of Islam in the 1930s augmented the Muslim-American population among African Americans, and this group including such prominent figures as Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan has had an enormous influence on American life and politics since the 1960s. Since passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, approximately 1 million Muslims have come to America, establishing new neighborhoods and communities in all 50 states.

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention, & Longevity

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention, & Longevity
Author: Swami Sadashiva Tirtha,Sat Yuga Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0965804259
675 pages | PDF | 51 MB

The theories and practices of Ayurvedic medicine-including the therapeutic benefits of aromas, foods, herbs, meditation, yoga, and more-are featured in this comprehensive handbook. With a section dedicated to health disorders, this guide clarifies the simplicity of healing naturally and offers counsel towards an improved sense of well-being, reduced stress, and mental peace. Photographs of more than 80 herbs and yoga postures round out this home reference and teaching tool.

Although there is no shortage of books that attempt to explain Ayurveda medicine (a system that originated in India about 5000 years ago) to a popular audience, the author, instructor at the Ayurveda Holistic Health Center in Bayville, NY, claims that this is the first English-language textbook on the subject. However, he does little to simplify this complicated system and goes into too much detail not only for average readers but for health practitioners who want to learn more about this form of treatment. Many of his statements seem far-fetched (e.g., can the color orange really help with menstrual cramps?). Organization is poor; for instance, information on therapies for diabetes is spread throughout the book rather than being concentrated in the section on diseases. Perhaps the most useful information here is the list of Ayurvedic resources and the glossary containing clear definitions of many of the terms used. Better choices for books on Ayurveda medicine include titles by Vasant Lad (Ayurveda: The Science of Self Healing, Lotus Light, 1990) and Deepak Chopra (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, LJ 6/15/93). Recommended only for libraries with extensive collections in alternative medicine.?Natalie Kupferberg, Arizona State Univ. West, Phoenix

Historical Encyclopedia of Natural and Mathematical Sciences | 51.3 MB

Historical Encyclopedia of Natural and Mathematical Sciences | 51.3 MB

Hardcover: 5800 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (March 1, 2009)
Language: English

This Encyclopedia provides a saga of history of ideas, discovery and invention in the natural and mathematical sciences over 100 generations of great thinkers from Thales to Feyman. It blends the essential historical data (chronology, biographies, major background, political and economical events, etc.) together with science proper (principles, laws, experiments, observations, theories, equations, etc.). This encyclopedia tells the reader not only who did it and when it was done but also precisely what was done. In this treatise, I have drawn a map of science, technology and great ideas that is as accurate and complete as possible, yet sufficiently free from unessential details and sufficiently condensed as not to obstruct the general view.

The work spans the history and evolution of science up to 2005, including all technological, theoretical, and experimental milestones in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth and space sciences, cosmology etc. Included are also the social sciences, philosophy and historical and environmental events which impacted human life on earth.

This milestone extensive work combines the essentials of history – biography, chronology, political and economic background – with the observations, theories, principles, laws and equations that constitute the specifics of science.

The 5800-page Encyclopedia arises from the conviction that the optimal perspective on science is through the lens of history, setting aside traditional divisions of discipline and specialty, and rising above geopolitical boundaries. Reaching from 4,200 BCE to the 21st century CE, the Encyclopedia tells (as the author himself puts it) "not only who did it and when it was done but also precisely what was done."

The author, Ari Ben-Menahem, surveys 100 generations of great thinkers, offering 2070 detailed biographies of scientists, engineers, explorers and inventors, who left their mark on the history of science and technology. The span of coverage is all-encompassing: mathematics, philosophy, logic, physical and environmental sciences (including physics, chemistry, astronomy, earth and space sciences and cosmology), life sciences (biology, medicine, physiology, botany, zoology and biochemistry), associated engineering disciplines, and the social sciences (among them economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics and more).

The six-volume Encyclopedia also includes 380 articles summarizing the time-line of ideas in the leading fields of science, technology, mathematics and philosophy, plus useful tables, figures and photos, and 20 ‘Science Progress Reports’ detailing scientific setbacks. Interspersed throughout are quotations, gathered from the wit and wisdom of sages, savants and scholars throughout the ages from antiquity to modern times.
